The Child Development Program at John Adams School in North Brunswick, New Jersey, was designed to be an immediate intervention for children with learning problems in the early elementary grades. This two-volume guide describes the work done in the program and how the program can be replicated. The first book details characteristics of the program. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the preventive aspect of the program, as well as some of the developmental efforts undertaken with specific individuals at the Kindergarten level. Chapter 3 describes work done in grade one in the areas of reading, printing, and arithmetic. Chapter 4 presents issues addressed by the program and its implementation from plan to practice. Chapter 5 examines improvements adopted from the areas of physiology, optometry, nutrition, and psychology. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the development of motor, visual, and auditory skills. Chapter 8 reviews commercially available programs. Chapter 9 discusses the technical side of organizing the program and running it efficiently. Chapters 10 and 11 examine several case studies, and an account of the experience of a former student. Chapter 12 gives a historical account of the program. Chapters 13 and 14 include a list of the items mentioned in the book and suggested readings. The second book serves as an appendix and contains some of the guides, manuals, and forms used in the program, including the teachers' manual on developing learning readiness, teachers' guide to Webstermasters, and a prereading battery.
