Better Schools: Resource Materials for School Heads, Modules 1-7.
Commonwealth Secretariat, London (England).
Principals are in the front line of battle to create an environment for quality education. However, school heads in Africa work under the most difficult conditions, and are often not well prepared for the tasks they must undertake. This series of seven modules was designed to provide school heads with a source of practical ideas about how to become managers of better schools. The modules were designed to be used in any English-speaking education system in Africa; country-specific versions may be available for some systems. The modules were drafted by seven Ministries of Education in Africa (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zimbabwe) assisted by a further four (Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zambia). The material were critiqued at two regional workshops, and piloted among school heads and inspectors, teacher trainers, and district officials in seven African countries. The seven modules are: (1) self-development for educational managers; (2) principles of educational management; (3) personnel management; (4) managing the curriculum and resources; (5) financial management; (6) monitoring school effectiveness; and (7) the governance of schools. Each module includes a general introduction and an introduction that is specific to the individual unit, an estimate of individual study time, a statement of expected learning outcomes, suggested activities, comments, and a summary.
