Tools for Teaching with Technology: The WIU Approach for Technology Integration into Teacher Education.

This collection of 21 booklets about the Western Illinois University (WIU) model for teacher education, centered on principles of instructional designs, targets five technologies: computer applications, telecommunications, distance learning, interactive multimedia, and instructional video. Teacher competencies are specified for instructional design and the five targeted technologies; they are achieved through core and content-based modules. After an extensive overview, "Breaking the Barriers, Meeting Challenges," core modules include: (1) "Using the Computer to Enhance Teacher Productivity"; (2) "Telecommunications for the K-12 Classroom"; (3) "Distance Education in the K-12 Classroom"; (4) "Interactive Multimedia for the Classroom"; (5) "Instructional Video Production for the K-12 Classroom"; and (6) "Planning for Effective Technology Integration." The 12 content-based modules are: (1) "Technology Applications in the K-8 Science Classroom"; (2) "Teaching Social Studies with Historic Landmarks"; (3) "Electronic Resources for Teaching Secondary Social Studies"; (4) "Integrating Technology into Early Childhood Thematic Teaching"; (5) "Using Technology To Enhance Parent/Community Involvement"; (6) "Producing and Integrating Instructional Video"; (7) "Early Childhood Behavioral Assessment"; (8) "Exploring Planning Approaches for Teaching Thematically"; (9) "Your First Trip on the Internet"; (10) "Using Video To Enhance Understanding of Human Growth and Development"; (11) "Electronic Searching for Children's Literature Resources"; and (12) "Microteaching, Reflective Processing, and Video: A Metacognitive Twist." A program overview, a booklet for each module, a faculty support booklet, description and illustrations of equipment and infrastructure, and two videos are packaged in a file box. (ND)
