The stories of five young black men growing up in the Roxbury area of Boston (Massachusetts) in the late 1960s and early 1970s illustrate the difficulties and coping required to reach adulthood in the city. The young men were part of the Pathways to Identity project of Harvard University, a longitudinal study that has, since 1966, interviewed 61 young men in the city. A portrait is drawn of each of the five adolescents and their lives. Although they grew up in similar urban circumstances, they became very different individuals with differing coping styles. Chapters are titled: (1) "Strategic Styles: Individual Responses to Social Reality"; (2) "The Conformist: Keith Sutton"; (3) "The Retreater: Ernie Hayes"; (4) "The Tough Guy: Leroy Duncan"; (5) "The Actor: Dave Cooper"; (6)"The Cool Guy: Hank Nelson"; (7) "Toward Manhood: Growth and Change in Styles over Time"; and (8) "Fostering Nondeviant Styles against the Odds: Toward a Model of Intervention Strategies." Chapter 8 is new to this edition, and discusses intervention strategies. The epilogue discusses what has happened to three of the subjects since the study; two could not be located.
