Drugs in the Schools: Preventing Substance Abuse. Exercise in Participation Series. Student Text. Third Edition.
Center for Civic Education, Calabasas, CA.
Designed to help students understand substance abuse and exercise civic responsibility, this book examines the problem of drugs in an imagary middle school, "Jackson Middle School." Students are asked to work with other members of their class to develop a plan to deal with the problem of drugs and alcohol in that school. After completing their plan, students may be given the opportunity to explain it to their school principal and other people who are responsible for dealing with the problem of drugs and alcohol in their community. An important goal of the program is to give students practice in exercising their right to examine problems in society and to express their ideas about how they should be solved. It stresses student and citizen responsibility to be well informed about social problems and the necessity to work cooperatively with others to help solve them. The workbook contains seven lessons.
