This Kids Count factbook reports findings of a 1993 state project conducted as part of a national program designed to promote accountability of children through a nationwide profile of their condition. The data are used to encourage the private and public sectors to target specific problems and groups of children for programming and fund raising efforts. Following an overview, the factbook presents four special reports on: Youth-at Risk Education Trust Fund; Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 1992; Child Death and Injuries on South Dakota Roads; and Native American Demographics. The bulk of the document contains state and county data tables with the following categories: (1) population; (2) vital statistics, including infant mortality, child death rates, teen violent death rates, and teen out-of-wedlock births; (3) family profiles; and (4) poverty and education statistics.
