Positive Discipline. (Revised Edition).
Nelsen, Jane
Understanding why children do not behave the way they used to, and why both controlling and overly-permissive discipline styles are ineffective, is the first step for parents and teachers who are facing child-discipline problems. This book describes a program of positive discipline principles aimed at assisting parents and teachers in understanding their children. It also offers methods for practical application that will help children learn self-discipline, responsibility, problem-solving skills, and cooperation. Chapter 1 describes the positive approach and how it differs from other behavior management approaches. Chapter 2 covers some basic concepts concerning child behavior, and Chapter 3 describes the significance of birth order and how it affects children's perception of themselves. Chapter 4 explores the four main behavioral issues, including undue attention, power, revenge, and assumed inadequacy. Chapter 5 describes the use of natural and logical consequences to create helpful learning experiences, and Chapter 6 focuses on using encouragement effectively. Chapters 7 and 8 describe the use of class and family meetings whose purpose is to teach cooperation, mutual respect, and social interest. Chapter 9 guides the user in applying the approach described, and Chapter 10 describes the resultant family and school environment attained as a result of using positive discipline. Seven appendixes cover starting a positive discipline study group, creating a sample flyer, a sample study group schedule, group participation, a problem solving form, using the problem solving form, and problem solving possibilities.
