The Impact of War on Child Health in the Countries of the Former Yugoslavia. A Report of a Workshop (Trieste, Italy, March 27-30, 1994).
National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC.; Institute of Medicine (NAS), Washington, DC.
The wars that began in 1991 in the countries of the former Yugoslavia caused widespread child suffering. This workshop report presents the findings from the Workshop on the Impact of War on Child Health held for doctors from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. The workshop's goal was to address the common interest in the health and welfare of children by focusing on the state of child health and well-being in these countries which have experienced the political, economic, social, and physical devastation of war. The first section of this summary reports on the workshop study areas. For each country, the following are discussed: (1) epidemiology and getting information on child health in wartime conditions; (2) primary health care; (3) preventive medicine; (4) infant and child mortality; (5) trauma; (6) acute and chronic illnesses; (7) mental health, and; (8) child protection. The second section presents 49 specific findings in general care, epidemiology, primary health care, trauma, acute and chronic illness, mental health, child protection, and professional development. The third section describes the need for a network of health professionals whose aim is to improve the health and welfare of the children affected. Four appendices list advisors to the organizing committee, invited participants, organizational summaries, and the international convention on the rights of the child, including a summary of main provisions.
