Phonics. Quick-and-Easy Learning Centers, Grades K-2.
Spann, Mary Beth
Suggesting that phonics instruction that is an integral component of a language arts program can offer children important skills and strategies for developing reading and writing abilities, this book presents phonics activities designed to enrich existing language arts curricula by combining phonics instruction with real-life connections, such as children's names, recipes, mail, signs, read-aloud songs, shopping, rhyming poems, and games. Each of the 8 "learning center" plans in the book is designed to reflect students' interests, experiences, and abilities. "Center openers" suggest ideas for pulling together inviting center environments, and follow with step-by-step directions for making and presenting phonics-related games, activities, and exercises. The book's introductory section discusses using learning centers in the classroom, the best ways to begin, assessment and evaluation, managing materials, and resources. The eight centers in the book are: (1) What's in a Name?; (2) A Cook Nook; (3) Signs of the Times; (4) Wheels of Phonics; (5) Rhyme Time; (6) Read-Aloud Songs; (7) To Market, To Market; and (8) the Postal Zone.
