Contextual Learning Issues [in HRD].
These five papers are from a symposium that was facilitated by Michael Leimbach at the 1995 conference of the Academy of Human Resource Development (HRD). "Developing Systems Thinking Ability in Organizations" (Carol Ann Zulauf) reports a study that examined the relationship between cognitive complexity, locus of control, and selected mediating variables. It presents findings that show several predictor variables correlate significantly with systems thinking. "Leveraging Quality Initiatives through Action Technologies" (Thomas J. Shindell, Robert L. Dilworth) outlines the characteristics of action research, action learning, and action science and provides a road map that can contribute to the creation of learning organizations. "Career Development Needs of Safety Professionals" (Joe W. Kotrlik, Cyndi H. Gaudet) reports study results that indicate respondents perceived that their level of expertise in trainer competencies was between basic and intermediate and their level of ethical practice needed little or no change in seven issues and some change in six ethical issues. "Instructional Design in the Context of Situated Learning" (Sean Courtney) reports on an action-research study in which the instructor sought to situate a graduate-level course in instructional design in a real-world context. "A Model for Developing Foreign Language HRD Programs" (Zita Jusinskas Halka, Robert E. Nolan) proposes a model for developing effective foreign language training programs within the business and industrial settings. (YLB)
