Report of the Task Force on Professional Education about Violence and Abuse.
Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board, St. Paul.
A course inventory and a graduate student survey showed that while higher education has addressed violence and abuse issues in professional programs, efforts have not always kept up with changes in society. The inventory of postsecondary courses reported 925 courses dealing with issues of violence and abuse along with other aspects of professional education. In the survey of 1,168 recent graduates of professional programs, over 90 percent of respondents reported having direct need for understanding about violence and abuse. For all professional fields, required courses were less likely to have contributed to graduates' understanding than their own reading, research, workshops, experience, and on-the-job training. Specific areas of violence studied in professional education programs varied considerably by field. A section of the report presents data on licensing agencies, Minnesota institutions, curriculum standards, and continuing education for specific professional programs. Another section details the survey findings for each professional field covering course inventory, professional experience with violence, courses taken, adequacy of preparation, and future course development. Three recommendations to the legislature are offered: holding legislative hearings, transmitting the report and its findings to the appropriate programs and agencies, and establishing a multi-disciplinary Higher Education Center.
