Intended for coaches of school competitive problem-solving teams, this publication details 70 suggestions for building, motivating, and training problem-solving teams in grades 4 to 8. The tips cover a range of topics related to preparing for competition, the competition itself, and post-competition. The pre-competition suggestions include: (1) selecting the team; (2) developing a team philosophy; (3) using all team members with a fair division of labor; (4) maintaining high levels of motivation; (5) avoiding voting; (6) developing self-reliance; (7) practicing without overpracticing; (8) taking creative risks; (9) criticizing and praising effectively; and (10) planning the performance and allowing room for error. The tips for competition include: (1) knowing the judges, playing to them, and anticipating their questions; (2) maintaining a pleasant, assertive, and professional demeanor in competition; and (3) dealing with superstitions. The post-competition suggestions include: dealing with failure, debriefing after performance, and attending higher level competitions. Each tip includes the title and supporting quotations related to the tip, and an brief description of how the tip was used in actual team creative problem solving.
