Charting Your Course: How To Prepare To Teach More Effectively.
Pregent, Richard
This book presents a systematic approach to developing a new college course involving, first, global analysis; second, thought, planning, and methodical preparation; and, third, evaluation of results. Chapter 1 recommends that the teacher examine the conditions of the teaching situation including reasons for the course, resources available, and student characteristics. Chapter 2 advises on formulating course objectives at various levels stressing their fundamental role in course planning and implementation. Chapter 3 considers planning how to evaluate learning, noting the formative and summative roles of evaluation. It describes several evaluation instruments, suggesting criteria for choosing instruments, and offering practical advice on developing, administering, and correcting exams. Chapter 4 addresses teaching methods (organized into lecture methods, discussion or group methods, and individual methods) and offers selection criteria. Chapter 5 considers teaching materials, analyzes the relative pedagogical impact of various materials, and offers advice on correctly using each type of material. Chapter 6 discusses detailed planning of different learning activities using the course syllabus, the course outline, and the lesson plan. Chapter 7 examines the lecture method and presents a general model for lectures. Chapter 8 focuses on group dynamics and group discussion techniques. Finally, Chapter 9 proposes two means of formally evaluating one's own teaching. (Contains 118 references.) (CK)
