National Workshop on Vocational Rehabilitation, Behavioral, and Social Sciences Research. Report on Proceedings (Bethesda, Maryland, October 30-November 1, 1990).
Reed, L. Deno; Walker, Sylvia
This conference report summarizes presentations and discussions of a workshop on vocational rehabilitation and behavioral and social sciences research, which was intended to promote exchange of information within the research community, better management and planning within research projects sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), and utilization of research results. The report begins with a foreword by Robert R. Davila stressing the practical effects of research on the lives of people with disabilities, and opening remarks by William H. Graves, the NIDRR Director, discussing NIDRR's seven major goals. The report then explores the enlarged focus of current NIDRR-funded research into the areas of children, families, community integration, and supported employment. Chapter 3 summarizes recommendations developed by discussion groups organized around 10 research and training themes: (1) outcome research, (2) intervention research, (3) research for new and underserved populations, (4) systems change research, (5) research on self-determination and consumer participation, (6) policy research, (7) attitudinal research, (8) research to improve training, (9) multicultural research and training, and (10) technology transfer. Chapter 4 offers reflections on the conference recommendations, by William H. Graves. Appended are group summaries, a list of participants, and an overview of the Rehabilitation Services Administration Program. (DB)
