Year-Round Education: A Collection of Articles.
Fogarty, Robin, Ed.
A current educational trend involves looking for ways to make the most efficient use of the time students spend in school. As schools embrace curricular reform, those on the front lines are reevaluating traditional beliefs about how schools are structured. This book contains a collection of articles that present information necessary to making a decision about implementing year-round education. Following the introduction, the first section consists of five articles that offer general information on year-round schools: (1) "Alternative Approaches to Organizing the School Day and Year: A National Commission Examines New Structures for Improving Student Learning" (Julia Anderson); (2) "YRE Basics: History, Methods, Concerns, Future" (Don Glines); (3) "YRE Rationale: Philosophy and Methods" (Don Glines); (4) "Year-Round Education: Impact on Support Services, Transportation, Operation, Facilities, and Maintenance" (James C. Bradford, Jr.); and (5) "Year-Round Education" (Sue E. Mutchler). The second set of essays presents authentic examples of year-round schools: (6) "Year-Round Schools: The Star of the Sea Model" (Paul S. Piper); (7) "Making Year-Round Education (YRE) Work in Your District: A Nationally Recognized Single Track High School Model" (James C. Bradford, Jr.); (8) "Year Round Schooling for Academically At-Risk Students: Outcomes and Perceptions of Participants in an Elementary Program" (Wallace D. Campbell); (9) "Year-Round Education: A Strategy for Overcrowded Schools" (Morton Inger); and (10) "Reinventing Community by Changing the Academic Calendar: Changing Time and the Consequences" (Robin Cash, Robert D. Becker, Frank Venturo, and Paul Edwards). The five articles in the final section focus on the change process that transforms the concept of YRE into reality: (11) "Quality Schools and the Myth of the Nine-Month School Year" (Larry L. Dlugosh); (12) "Year-Round Education: A Case for Change" (Teresa Arambula Greenfield); (13) "Opinions Regarding Year Round Education: A Survey Among the Public" (Kim VanderHooven); (14) "Year-Round Schooling as an Avenue to Major Structural Reform" (Patricia Gandara and Judy Fish); and (15) "Seven Rules to Year-Round Schooling: Research and Dialogue Make Implementation Possible" (Gar A. Knox). References accompany each chapter; an index is provided. (LMI)
