This booklet presents the most comprehensive review of school programs designed to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and drug use currently available. The information it provides should help teachers, school principals, and other concerned citizens determine how to spend scarce prevention dollars. Many parents assume that school prevention programs will protect their children from drugs. The information provided here is intended to provide a bridge between research and practice so as to stimulate community discussion over which programs are best suited to a community's needs. The programs examined here are divided into four categories: comprehensive health programs, K-12 programs, elementary and middle school programs, and middle and high school programs. Each category contains program descriptions followed by three charts. The charts provide basic information about the program, such as: year created, cost, developmental appropriateness, and ease of administration; curriculum coverage of awareness and resistance skills, including refusal skills and normative education; and curriculum coverage of life skills, including self esteem, decision making, and stress management. Also identified are some of the key elements, such as teacher training and support and family involvement, that make up effective drug prevention curricula.
