Home Learning Enablers and Other Helps: Later Elementary-Middle School.
Early Childhood Education Administration Inst., Rockville, MD.
Intended to help children sustain gains made in school, this manual consists of simple learning activities that parents can use to engage children ranging from second grade through middle school/junior high school. The description of each activity outlines the purpose for the activity, the materials needed, the duration of the activity, how it is to be performed, the method for evaluating the activity's effect, and ideas to make the activity simpler for younger children and more challenging for older children. Some of the activities for second grade children also suggest how the use of computers may be incorporated. Each activity addresses a specific subject such as math, science, history, geography, or language arts. In addition to focusing on subjects, activities for middle school/junior high school children emphasize practical issues such as money management, job choices, banking, travel plans. The manual also includes papers which discuss understanding 7- to 10-year-olds, 11-year-olds and 12-year-olds. (BAC)
