This report of a Virginia interdisciplinary task force on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the schools reviews what is known about this disorder and presents recommendations to the Virginia Department of Education and local school districts. Recommendations include the need to provide a systematic program of inservice education and revise state rules, regulations, and guidelines in specified ways. Recommendations to local school districts include development of plans for programing for ADHD children and establishment of resource libraries. Incorporation of education regarding ADHD into all teacher training programs in the state is urged. Sections of the report discuss: (1) historical background of ADHD; (2) definition; (3) relationship to special education categories; (4) prevalence; (5) identification and assessment; (6) the schools' role in the assessment and diagnostic process for ADHD; (7) medical interventions; (8) school-based interventions; (9) parent/family issues; (10) controversial interventions; and (11) conclusions.
