This guide is for teachers, tutors, counselors, and others working with adult learners in programs of literacy, adult basic education, General Educational Development test preparation, and English as a Second Language. It is a compendium of short articles written by 50 adult basic educators in Pennsylvania. The articles provide background information and resources for literacy practitioners. The guide is organized in seven chapters. The first chapter provides background about adult education in Pennsylvania and the services of educational agencies in the state; the second chapter provides information to help educational practitioners understand the adult learner. Topics covered include the following: research application, teaching strategies and students, multiculturalism, student motivation, and addiction. In the third chapter, intake and assessment measures are discussed; the fourth chapter offers strategies for teaching adults. Supplemental activities are considered in the fifth chapter. Professional development and support are discussed in the sixth chapter. The final chapter contains the following: lists of 37 bibliographies, resources, and journals, and 55 curriculum resource publishers; information about the authors of the included articles; glossaries of related terms, agencies, organizations, and abbreviations; and a list of General Educational Development Centers in Pennsylvania.
