Peer Advocacy Training for ABE Students. Final Report & Product.
Lebanon County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, PA.
A project was conducted to help single parents residing in public housing who were participants in an adult basic education (ABE) life skills program learn how to request services from school districts and social service providers. An advocacy curriculum outline and an extensive bibliography, as well as procedures and materials for training peer advocates in an ABE setting were developed. Twenty-five students were given information and trained to become advocates for themselves and their families, and five students developed the skills and knowledge to become advocates for other ABE students, particularly in school hearings and with mental health providers. Project evaluation, through self-assessment by the students and of the goals and objectives of the project by the teacher, the peer advocate coordinator, and the project director, was positive. (This document contains a bibliography listing 10 sources for resources, and the project materials, including resource lists, narratives of advocacy services provided in several cases, and information on legal and procedural steps to take in advocating for school and mental health services in Pennsylvania.)
