This document contains learning activities to help middle school girls begin the career planning process and resist gender-role stereotyping. The activities are designed for individuals and/or groups of girls either in classroom settings or in organizations such as Girl Scouts and 4-H Clubs. A total of 30 activities are organized into 4 sections as follows: 8 activities to help girls discover and recognize their interests, skills, and values; 8 activities examining how certain talents and interests might eventually lead to certain careers, how gender-role stereotyping may influence the career planning process, and how stereotyping may be resisted; 10 career exploration activities emphasizing the wide variety of careers requiring some knowledge of science and math; and 4 activities explaining how to obtain information needed to set personal career goals by interviewing family and friends, individuals in actual workplaces, and/or mentors and by touring workplaces. Purpose, time, materials needed, and procedure for each activity are described. Concluding the document are the following: answers to one of the exercises; lists of handouts and readings included in the document; and lists of publishers of 4 magazines for girls, 11 publications about gender equity and career planning, 20 organizations providing career-related information, and 13 organizations for women/girls.
