A Look at Ourselves, Learning Packet.

Images of people can serve several purposes in works of art. Individuals have had their likenesses embellished or altered for political, social, or religious purposes. Or, images of individuals have been employed by other people to fit their needs. This Learning Packet, designed for use with grade levels 1-8, addresses three themes: (1)"People as Symbols"; (2) "People as Character Portrayals"; and (3) "Real People." A section of this packet is devoted to each of these themes. Two works of art slides (not included here) will be compared and contrasted for each section. Suggested activities for each thematic section and a list of resources for further study are given. Next to each activity, relevant subject areas are indicated, including visual arts, drama, language arts, social studies, English, and mathematics. (MM)
