Vaccines for Children: Reexamination of Program Goals and Implementation Needed to Ensure Vaccination. Report to Congressional Requesters.
General Accounting Office, Washington, DC. Program Evaluation and Methodology Div.
This report presents: (1) a review of the evidence that vaccine cost has prevented children from being immunized on time; (2) an evaluation of the implementation of the Vaccines For Children (VFC) program, including whether this program, as implemented, is likely to meet the needs of the under-immunized children; and (3) some options for improving vaccine delivery to them. Following an executive summary, chapter 1 describes the Vaccines For Children program and its background. Chapter 2 examines vaccine cost as a barrier to child immunization. Chapter 3 looks at variations and problems in implementation of the VFC program. Options for reducing missed opportunities and improving immunization rates are suggested in chapter 4. The final chapter offers concluding comments and issues for consideration. (TJQ)
