The NEA 1996 Almanac of Higher Education.
Wechsler, Harold, Ed.
This publication contains seven essays on current and important issues in higher education and a 1994-95 faculty salary report. "Faculty Salaries, 1994-95" (John B. Lee) offers a detailed analysis of three reports on faculty salaries. "Faculty Workload and Productivity in the 1990s: Preliminary Findings" (Henry L. Allen) expands the knowledge about workload and productivity by drawing on recent national surveys. "Critics of College Teaching" (Walter P. Metzger) points out patterns in the past three decades of recurring waves of criticism of college teaching. "Negotiating Academic Restructuring" (Rachel Hendrickson, Christine Maitland, and Gary Rhoades) looks at how restructuring is affecting three areas of faculty union contracts. "State Policy and Budget Developments" (William Zumeta and John Fawcett-Long) documents developments in state appropriations and in tuition policies, student aid, and enrollment limitations. "Benefits and Retirement: A Challenging Environment" (Jay L. Chronister) addresses the cost of key benefits, the need for financial and retirement planning for faculty and staff, and access to benefits for domestic partners. "Administrative Staff: Salaries and Issues" (David C. Montgomery and Gwendolyn L. Lewis) examines types of administrative growth, recent salary trends, how salaries differ by type of institution, level of position, and function, and administrators' distinguishing characteristics. The institutional faculty salary report provides salary and compensation information for the 3,221 institutions in the National Education Association's faculty salary universe. The data are organized by state, institutional type and control and are based on preliminary data released by the Department of Education. Each essay contains references. (JB)
