Connecting with the Past: History Workshop in Middle and High Schools.
Brown, Cynthia Stokes
This book advocates that teachers of history create for their students a workshop environment where they actually can practice being historians. Adolescents, rather than thinking analytically, prefer to identify strongly with heroes and heroines and to explore their own lives and identity, character and convictions, through heroic stories. This book explores the process of creating the history workshop in an active learning environment for students. The elements of the workshop include: (1) "Conception of History"; (2) "Primary Sources"; (3) "Multiple Perspectives"; (4) "Journal Writing"; (5) "History Talk Groups"; (6) "Lectures and Class Discussions"; and (7) "Process Writing Assignment."
