Health Wellness and Hospital Learning Center.
Bromberg, Bonnie; And Others
This paper describes activities conducted by an early childhood classroom in its health play center. A major purpose of this play center was to reduce children's fears and anxieties about medical personnel and emergency vehicles, and to raise awareness of the many aspects of health and wellness. The classroom environment contained a variety of medical equipment with which children had the opportunity to experiment and explore. Children engaged in role playing and took on roles of health care providers, patients, and concerned family members. Each activity is described in terms of its theme, the age group it corresponded to, materials required, child's role/procedure, teacher's role/questions, and adaptations/comments. The activities varied from body tracing, identifying body parts, and measuring heights and weights, to demonstrating proper hand washing techniques. Issues of diversity were incorporated with the use of multicultural dolls, and puppets and puzzles depicting children with different physical abilities. Individual growth in the areas of communication, personal awareness, socialization, emotional maturity, and cognitive and perceptual motor skills were emphasized throughout the development of the health play center.
