This guide presents and describes six effective teaching strategies for use with children affected by substance abuse before birth. This introduction provides information on the scope of the problem and the educational implications. It is noted that even without intervention when the child is still very young, teachers can improve the educational prospects for children at risk. Educators have identified practices that help them to succeed in regular education settings. The six practices are: (1) creating a nurturing classroom environment; (2) encouraging cooperative learning; (3) facilitating transitions and minimizing distractions; (4) helping students manage their behavior; (5) assessing for educational progress; and (6) building home-school connections. Follow-up activities, found at the end of each section in the guide, indicate how to translate the key ideas into practice.
