The introductory analytical essay by Richard A. Gray covers: early and recent history of research, findings of a 1979 report on smoking and disease, other diseases as complications, smoking and industrial toxins, and a description of the bibliography. The bibliography covers 106 books and articles published between 1980 and 1994 with most appearing between 1990 and 1994, as well as the surgeon general's reports published from 1979 through 1985.
