School Bullying: Insights and Perspectives.
Smith, Peter K., Ed.; Sharp, Sonia, Ed.
Recent research has shown that school bullying is a pervasive phenomenon. With increasing awareness of the problem, schools are learning to address school bullying. A series of investigations in 23 schools over a 2.5 year period was conducted in Sheffield, England, one of the largest monitored interventions to date. This book examines the nature and extent of bullying in schools and gives a succinct account of research into ways of reducing the problem. The book discusses the following approaches to dealing with bullying: (1) developing a whole-school policy; (2) using classroom and curriculum materials; (3) training lunchtime supervisors; (4) improving playground environment; and (5) working directly with students involved in bullying situations. The book's chapters and authors are: (1) "The Problem of School Bullying" (Peter Smith and Sonia Sharp); (2) "The Sheffield Project: Methodology and Findings" (Irene Whitney and others); (3) "The Role of Whole-School Policies in Tackling Bullying Behaviour in Schools" (Sonia Sharp and David Thompson); (4) "Tackling Bullying through the Curriculum" (Helen Cowie and Sonia Sharp); (5) "Empowering Pupils To Take Positive Action Against Bullying" (Sonia Sharp and Helen Cowie); (6) "Understanding and Preventing Bullying in the Junior School Playground" (Michael Boulton); (7) "Improving the School Ground Environment as an Anti-Bullying Intervention" (Cath Higgins); (8) "Working Directly with Pupils Involved in Bullying Situations" (Peter Smith and others); and (9) "Bullying and Children with Special Educational Needs" (Irene Whitney and others). Contains over 180 ref+rences. (BGC)
