Boys Town, founded in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan, attempts to respond to the challenges faced by today's children and youth with its own child care model, called the Boys Town Family Home Program. This model is based on family-style nurturing, behavioral-based instruction, and a "systems" approach to staff training and development. Boys Town's Home Campus contains over 80 "Family Homes," each dealing with the social, emotional, and spiritual needs of a small group of children. This manual is designed to help child care workers develop the necessary skills for working with troubled children and youth. The Boys Town's program emphasizes the need for training child care workers to be compassionate and competent, using aspects of the cognitive, psychodynamic (medical), behavioral, and positive peer culture (PPC) treatment models.
