Social Skills Planning Guide.
Alberg, Joni; And Others
This manual is intended to help educators of students with disabilities select and implement a social skills program through a five-step decision process, either manually or by use of software (available in both PC-DOS and Macintosh formats). After an introductory chapter, the second chapter focuses on what social skills are, why they are important, and why schools need to accept responsibility for teaching social skills. The third chapter provides information about instructional strategies, skill generalization and maintenance, integration of social skills instruction into existing curricula, and enlisting the help of students and adults. The decision-making process is detailed in Chapter 4, which helps to identify a social skills program appropriate to a given grade level, specific social skills needed, and within given budgetary and situational constraints. The fifth chapter contains a facilitator's guide to assist teams in the decision-making process. Appendices offer program summaries, a summary checklist which compares features of 76 social skills training programs, and facilitator materials. (Contains 69 references.) (DB)
