Teaching Self-Management Strategies to Adolescents.
Young, K. Richard; And Others
This book presents a behavioral program to teach adolescents basic self-management skills; two chapters provide the theoretical basis for the program and four chapters supply sample lesson plans. The first chapter is an introduction to behavioral self-management. It proposes a behavior change model with four major components: assessment, prescription for treatment, implementation of the program, and evaluation of the program's impact and implementation of recommended modifications. The second chapter discusses the teaching/learning process, considering motivation and reinforcement, the target population for this program, program objectives, program users, the basic instructional format, positive teacher behaviors, maintenance of self-management skills, and an overview of the instructional lessons. The four lessons are on: basic principles of self-management, implementing behavioral self-management, implementing academic self-management via a classroom performance record, and implementing academic self-management via use of an assignment planning strategy. Lessons contain six components: (1) review of previous lessons, (2) introduction and rationale, (3) discrimination training, (4) role-playing and student discussion, (5) student evaluation, and (6) student assignments. Appendices provide additional information on self-management programs, results of a survey of adolescent reinforcement preferences, and forms suitable for copying. (Contains 26 references.) (DB)
