Ideas for Inclusion: The School Administrator's Guide.
Beninghof, Anne M.; Singer, Anne Louise T.
This book for school administrators offers methods for effecting changes in school culture and practices so that inclusion of students with all kinds of disabilities is successful. The recommendations are based on such principles as the following: professionals must collaborate to serve students with disabilities appropriately; students are disadvantaged by a lack of diversity in classrooms; instructional environments must reflect real world demands, such as interdependence and independence; and curricula must incorporate a broader knowledge and skill base than traditional academic courses. After an introduction which identifies inclusion principles, defines terminology, and summarizes federal legislation requirements, individual chapters address the following general topics: (1) leadership; (2) the planning process; (3) assessment; (4) curriculum and instruction; (5) student supports; (6) family and community; (7) business management; and (8) personnel considerations. Each chapter discusses factors to consider and offers how-to strategies and sample forms and checklists. A resource section lists six agencies and associations concerned with disabilities. (Contains 10 references.) (DB)
