Issues in Workplace Literacy. Workplace Literacy Roundtable.

This document presents the text of a roundtable discussion on the topic of best practice in workplace literacy in which six individuals representing the following agencies/organizations participated: Ontario (Canada) Ministry of Education; City of York Board of Education; an employer in Markham, Ontario; a community literacy group in Ontario's Kitchener/Waterloo area; a private consulting firm in the field of workplace literacy; a Canadian government agency working on a labor assignment program; and the Metropolitan Toronto District Labour Council. The following were among the topics discussed during the roundtable: the definition and scope of workplace literacy; components and factors contributing to the effectiveness/success of workplace literacy programs; obstacles/barriers faced by businesses and unions attempting to develop and delivery workplace literacy programs; the elements and role of organizational needs assessments; workplace literacy program outcomes/results expected by employers and employees; the process and purpose of a literacy task analysis; strategies/procedures for developing effective partnerships among employers, unions, workers, and service providers; procedures for identifying and recruiting learners; curriculum development; program evaluation; and challenges faced by small businesses in developing/delivering workplace literacy programs.
