Dropout Rate Study, 1992-93. A Study of Annual Dropout Rates in Arizona Public Schools Grades Seven through Twelve.
Shoemaker, Caryn R.
This collection of statistics provides information on dropout rates in Arizona public schools. A dropout was defined as a student who was enrolled at the end of the 1991-92 school year or at any time during the 1992-93 school year, who was not enrolled at the end of the school year and whose absence could not be explained by transfer, graduation, or death. There were 3,529 dropouts from grades 7 and 8 combined, or 3.2 percent of the total enrollment. Only 11 percent deliberately left school or were expelled, but 86 percent were students whose status was unknown. Many may have been enrolled in other schools. There were 24,348 dropouts from high school, representing 12.4 percent of the total high school enrollment. More than half of these were students whose status was unknown. While the number of dropouts was highest at grade 9, the dropout rate was highest at twelfth grade and ungraded high school levels. Rates varied for ethnic groups but were lowest for Asian Americans and highest for American Indians. Males were somewhat more likely to drop out than females. Statewide, dropout rates were higher for 1992-93 than for 1991-92 by 1.5 percentage points. Thirteen tables and 7 charts illustrate the analysis. Six appendixes present reports in table form for 497 schools and 29 special programs in 29 districts. (SLD)
