This document presents a science project appropriate for lower elementary grades which is intended to introduce the ways of science, not to give established information or teach specific procedures. Each activity (corresponding to 10 days) contains three sections: teacher notes, teacher narrative, and research notes. Sample activities include: (1) what do pillbugs look like and where do they live? This is a day of exploring and examining; (2) How do pillbugs act and how do individuals vary? This is a day for observing and honing powers of observation; and (3) the PILLows, PIllars, and PILgrims set up observation stations today. The "Patricia Pillbug" story begins. Teacher notes give background on the activity and suggestions for organizing student activity and setting up the day's materials. Possible discussion questions are included to help guide students' curiosity and thinking. The teacher narrative can guide the presentation to students. The pages of the research notes are intended to be reproduced as handouts to guide students through the project activities. (MKR)
