A pesticide safety video for children 9-12 years old, "The Playing Field," draws children into the lives of a migrant farmworker family while teaching them about the dangers of pesticides. The video and the lessons are not limited to migrant education, but open a multicultural window for all children, migrant or nonmigrant. Teaching elements for social studies, science, language arts, and health as mandated by the state of Texas are addressed. This integrated curriculum approach is adaptable for team teaching, cooperative learning, and thematic instruction. Five lesson plans address presentation and discussion of the video, production of fruits and vegetables, migrant and seasonal farmworkers, pesticides and their use, and protection against pesticides. Lesson plans contain learning objectives for each main content area, materials, procedures for learning activities, and questions for discussion or writing assignments. The activities in the guide can be utilized for a single lesson or a full week of related activities. There is also a semester-long science project involving growing plants, either indoors or outdoors, with different types of pesticides. A variety of graphic materials accompany the guide and relate to specific lesson plans. A bibliography for student reading and further research is included, as well as other sources of information.
