Cooperative Teaching: Rebuilding the Schoolhouse for All Students.
Bauwens, Jeanne; Hourcade, Jack J.
This guide explains in a step-by-step fashion how all educators can remodel their professional practice through cooperative teaching. The guide outlines the planning, implementation, and evaluation of cooperative teaching between general educators and special educators. After considering basic features of collaboration, ways to implement cooperative teaching are considered, including team teaching, complementary instruction, and supportive learning activities. Administrative support issues, as well as time usage and schedules for the teaching partners and support service providers, are addressed. Sources of information for evaluating cooperative teaching and types of evaluation methods are considered. Interpersonal skills and issues such as flexibility and sharing space with another teacher are addressed, as are possible sources of conflict and ways to resolve conflict. Consideration is also given to the nature of change, administrative implications of cooperative teaching, and ways to disseminate information about cooperative teaching. Self-assessment questionnaires and checklists are included that address: readiness for collaboration, levels of concern regarding cooperative teaching, time management, flexibility, and teacher behavior in interpersonal relationships. Individual chapters contain references, and a sample time log is appended. (SW)
