Creative Display & Environment.
Jackson, Margaret
This book builds a case for the importance of the learning environment as functional, inviting, and enabling for children. Chapter 1, "A pressing need: why display and environment for learning matter," introduces the book, discusses a strategy for staff development, suggests points to consider when surveying the school, and talks about involving children in the creation of a learning environment. Chapter 2, "Displays and the art of displaying," contains information on display variations. Chapter 3, "Resources for display," suggests acquiring artifacts and designed forms; resource banks; art galleries, artists, and craftspeople; museums; and books and illustrative resources. Chapter 4, "Developing a curriculum-based display project," suggests a strategy for developing such projects; contains themes and ideas for curriculum-based display projects; and provides information on using curriculum displays. Chapter 5, "Creating displays--the ways and the means," lists essential materials and defines a school display tool kit; describes mounting two-dimensional work for display purposes; discusses surfaces for two-dimensional presentation and resources for 3-dimensional display; and provides information on visual communication to accompany displays. Thirty-one pages of color photographs of displays in early childhood education settings conclude the book. (DR)
