Don't Worry, They'll Grow Up: A Parent's Survival Guide.
Tubbs, Janet
This workbook was developed as part of an arts-based prevention and primary intervention program for preschools, parochial and elementary schools, day care centers, churches, and homes. It is designed to help parents identify potential or existing problems and create feelings of value and self-reliance in young children. The importance of enjoying parenting and respecting the child are pervasive themes throughout the text. Individual chapters consider the following: (1) techniques for understanding yourself and the impact of the painful comments stored in your psyche; (2) ways of breaking destructive patterns and understanding what is done and said to children; (3) techniques for understanding the stress of childhood; (4) developing self-esteem; (5) guidelines and activities for making decisions; (6) trusting yourself; (7) temperaments; (8) gangs, groups, and cults; (9) creativity and self-worth; (10) the importance of color; (11) ways of creating a happy, healthy home; (12) the therapeutic and educational benefits of journal writing for children and parents; (13) puppetry; (14) music, sound, and noise; (15) table manners and telephone courtesy; (16) fun things to do; and (17) ways of developing imagination and improving memory. The final chapter summarizes various tips and observations made throughout the text. (SM)
