Planning Additions to Academic Library Buildings: A Seamless Approach.
Hawthorne, Pat, Ed.; Martin, Ron G., Ed.
This document presents three case studies that illustrate how library staffs and architectural design teams can work together to plan additions that are successful solutions to building problems. The case studies cover the experiences of Hope College, Holland, Michigan (David Jensen, Margaret Jensen), Western Maryland College, Westminster, Maryland (Dave Neikirk), and the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington (Sarah C. Michalak). Highlights include cooperation among architects, campus planners, consultants, and librarians; the library planning committee; design elements and the construction processes; a new name and identity; functional changes; floor plan descriptions; study spaces; the library presence and environment; campus community feedback; space shortages; funding; service for people with disabilities; and advice. Eighteen figures present floor plans. Appendices provide brief descriptions of poster sessions from eight university libraries, a checklist of additions to academic library buildings, library contacts and architects, and a bibliography of related publications of the Library Administration and Management Association of the American Library Association.
