A study evaluated the labor market outcomes of individuals with various types of postsecondary educational experiences. In particular, it examined differences among three groups: students who pursued technical education programs; those who pursued academic programs; and those individuals who did not pursue any type of postsecondary education. The study used empirical evidence from the National Longitudinal Survey of High School Students in 1972 concerning the relationship between economic outcomes and grades earned and the degree to which the labor market rewarded credentials. Wages and earning models yielded different structural parameter estimates when based on the three different populations. The differences were most dramatic for high school background effects and for postsecondary characteristics. The empirical results from the technique used to correct for self-selection suggested that individuals' choices among the three postsecondary tracks were not the result of absolute advantage.
