Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: ADHD Task Force Report.
Michigan State Dept. of Education, Lansing. Special Education Services.
A Michigan task force examined existing and needed services for students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to assist school districts in developing services and to create a systematic plan for statewide information dissemination regarding referral, assessment, identification, intervention strategies, and legal mandates. Individual sections of this report address: the historical perspective of ADHD, identification, legal mandates, assessment, school-based strategies, home-based strategies, medical interventions, transition, and collaboration and communication. Six recommendations emerged from the task force activities: (1) develop a document which addresses awareness and training needs; (2) create and implement an inservice and preservice training program; (3) provide opportunities for parents to attend conferences and training sessions which focus on effective collaboration, legal rights, and advocacy; (4) designate a professional staff member to coordinate student services and staff development; (5) provide transition planning; and (6) designate regular planning time for collaborative teamwork among the professionals involved. Twenty-three appendices include handouts for parents, checklists, lists of teaching strategies and student characteristics, information resources, a model district policy, information on medication, and an ADHD rating scale.
