Gender Issues in Education.
Grossman, Herbert; Grossman, Suzanne H.
Outcomes of education for female and male students have been the subject of much discussion and research. In general, females and males experience disparate educational outcomes and fulfill different gender-specific roles both in school and in the larger society. The first part of this text examines gender differences in students' school experiences, as well as societal roles and their origins. Part two discusses the practical concerns of educators--dealing with gender issues in the classroom. The first chapter begins by describing current educationally relevant differences between the genders with special attention placed on students' emotional responses, interpersonal relationships and moral development, communication styles and learning styles. Gender differences in students' enrollment in academic and vocational courses, participation in school activities, academic achievement, and behavior in class are then examined. Chapter 2 discusses the origins of these differences. In chapter 3, various opinions and definitions of gender equity are examined; the fourth chapter deals with approaches for accommodating educational techniques to gender differences; and the final chapter describes techniques for eliminating gender-specific behavior. Self-quizzes, student activities, and selected references are contained in each chapter. (LL)
