Building a Caring, Cooperative Classroom: Integrating Social Skills through the Language Curriculum. Second Edition.
Bellanca, James
Intended for teachers working to improve social skills for young children K-3 who are moving from the self-centered period of early childhood into the other-centered world of the classroom, this book presents a curriculum of social skills, a teaching methodology, and specific lessons drawn from the experience of classroom teachers. The book is composed of six different units, each dealing with specific topics related to development of social skills: (1) getting started with a cooperative classroom; (2) friendship; (3) responsibility; (4) working together; (5) problem solving; and (6) conflict resolution. All five lessons in each unit list materials, the set or hook to engage students, lesson objective, lesson or activity, discussion guidelines, closure activities, and follow-up. Sheets for making overhead transparencies are included for good group manners, friends outline, goal score board, problem-solving observation chart, conflict collage instructions, and definitions of block as an obstacle to goals. Worksheets are also appended for topics including friendship award certificates, responsibility, cartoons, scenarios, problem-solving, sequence chart, and the hare and the tortoise fable. The overhead sheets and worksheets are cross-referenced to their respective lesson. Titles of videos relevant to each are also listed, with the source address. Contains 29 references. (WP)
