Collection Analysis Project. Final Report.
Dole, Wanda; And Others
The Collection Analysis Project (CAP) was undertaken in response to one of the major recommendations of the University at Stony Brook Libraries' strategic plan. It is the first step in promoting the necessary change to bring collection management and development into conformity with accepted professional practice, and make it more responsive to the University's needs and priorities. A task force examined the Libraries' collection development program in relation to external factors, such as the publishing industry and technology, and to the mission and goals of the university. It was discovered that a number of actions were required to develop and maintain collections in support of academic and research programs. The report is composed of two major sections. The first is an overview which includes a shortened version of the interim report and identifies the institutional context. The second section consists of the synthesis of recommendations of the task force and the implementation strategy. Areas addressed in the project include: collection management organization, staffing, and training; collection analysis; funding and materials budget allocation; and preservation. The end result of the study is a list and explanation of 18 recommendations that address the major needs for change and provide the framework for its implementation. (MAS)
