Gregory, Martha Wille, Ed.
This training module was developed to introduce postsecondary personnel to the support services available for students with disabilities at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The module covers the definition and philosophy of support services, including the development of rehabilitation services, independent living, and the disability rights movement. It offers statistics on the percentage of full-time freshmen with disabilities and types of disabilities. It describes campus services for students with disabilities, including academic testing services, classroom accommodations, accessibility, transportation services, attendant and reader assistance, adaptive computing technology, the Learning Center, Ellis Library, student rooms, attendants, air conditioning, guide and service dogs, and diet. The module also describes outside resources, such as AHEAD (Association on Higher Education and Disability) and the HEATH Resource Center, and community services, including financial assistance, home health services, independent living, readers and reference services, interpreters, self-help and support services, transportation, and national toll free hotlines. The module contains handouts and overheads used to enhance important points. Handouts include a list of functions of disability service programs, descriptions of disability support services at University of Missouri-Columbia, and descriptions of community resources.
