Women Managers in Education--A Worldwide Progress Report.
Ruijs, Annelies; Leather, Susan, Ed.
Coombe Lodge Report, v23 n7-8 1993
The large percentage of women in the teaching profession is not reflected in the percentage of women who are leaders and managers in education. This book discusses why women are not more fairly represented in education management and what positive measures can be taken to redress the situation. It draws on presentations made at the "Equal Advances in Education Management" conference held in Vienna, Austria, in December 1990. Examples of plans already in action and case studies of colleges with "women-friendly" policies and practices are provided. Part 1 contains two chapters that provide an international comparison of the participation of women in educational management. Part 2, comprised of three chapters, examines obstacles to women's progress, including women's combination of career and domestic responsibilities, cultural barriers, and organizational barriers. Six chapters in part 3 offer strategies for improving the situation, such as training programs, recruitment and selection procedures, leave provisions and improved childcare facilities, flexible job arrangements, networks and mentoring, and equal opportunities programs. Two chapters in the fourth part summarize conference issues and describe directions for the future. Eighteen figures and a list of conference contributors are included. (LMI)
