This monograph describes the Success for All program, developed in 1986 by the Center for Research on Effective Schooling for Disadvantaged Students at Johns Hopkins University. The program is built around the idea that every child can and must succeed in the early grades, and that all aspects of school and classroom organization should be directed toward preventing academic deficits from appearing in the first place, recognizing and intervening when any deficits do appear, and providing students with a rich and full curriculum to enable them to build upon a firm foundation in basic skills. The academic focus of the program is on the development of writing and language arts skills through cooperative learning. The eight chapters in this monograph discuss: (1) the origins of the program; (2) language arts components; (3) tutoring programs; (4) prekindergarten and kindergarten programs; (5) family support and integrated services; (6) facilitating change: staff development and school restructuring; (7) research on the effectiveness of Success for All in various schools; and (8) the policy implications of the Success for All program. A concluding section illustrates specific strategies, procedures, and materials that are discussed in the text. Contains 77 references. (MDM)
