Training Manual for HIV/AIDS Prevention.
Epps, Patricia H.; Vallenari, Allison
This manual includes all necessary information for implementing the Champs program, which trains older elementary school students or middle/high school students to operate puppets to deliver an HIV/AIDS message to kindergarten through sixth graders. Relying on a peer approach, the Program provides scripted, prerecorded lessons intended to reach younger elementary youth with age-appropriate messages about HIV/AIDS. A basic premise is that the health message will have maximum impact if it comes from a student's peers or from respected older students. The material is divided into sections, the first two of which describe the Program and the Kit (puppets, videotape, and audio tapes) including instructions for constructing the puppet stage. Following sections are: The Need for HIV/AIDS prevention education, with suggestions on how to teach the material in the primary grades; The Method, including peer led activities and grade-specific puppet scripts and supplemental materials; The Puppets, covering puppeteering technique, tips for developing a good show, and advanced manipulation skills; The Facts, involving in-service materials for staff and parents, materials for overhead projection, lesson plan, general facts and information about HIV/AIDS; and The Results, including Program evaluation materials.
